The initial oil molecules involve three fatty acids chemically bonded to a glycerol molecule; reaction with methoxide results in breaking the fatty acids off of the backbone, separating them. The methoxide forms esters with the fatty acids, and these molecules act as fuel. An advantage to using biodiesel (bd) over SVO or WVO is that you don't need to convert your engine to a different type -- bd will work in a standard diesel engine. You may also blend bd with regular diesel in various ratios. This also means that ifyou run your car on bd around home but trek across country, you are not required to find bd stations to keep your car going; you can use commonly found fuel as well. |
